Conrad GESSNER - Bibliotheca instituta et collecta primum ... deinde in epitomen redacta, & ... locupletata, tertio recognita, & ... aucta per Iosiam Simlerum, iam vero postremo ... amplificata per Iohannem Iacobum Frisium. Tiguri [Zurich], excudebat Christophorus Froschoverus, 1583. In-f°: [56], 835, [3] pp. (spotting throughout, small worm-gallery across the lower margin, 2 endpapers at beginning missing, last bl. missing). Contemporary parchment. Lacks on spine and upper board. New and last edition of this famous Bibliotheca universalis, first published by Conrad Gessner in 1555, with the typographical mark of the Zurich printer Christoph Froschauer on the title page, and considerably enlarged by Johann Jakob Frisius. The founding work of general bibliography, it collects, classifies and describes known authors and titles in the fields of theology, philosophy, medicine, law, science and literature, in Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Continued by Josias Simler, then revised and expanded by Frisius, this is one of the first attempts at a universal bibliography.
