In-4° : [4], 516, [3-1 bl.] pp. Freckles. Contemporary brown half-chagrin boards, percaline boards, spine ribbed, gilt title. Stitching weakened, some pages disbound, others protruding. First edition, illustrated with 90 plates out of text, featuring 120 portraits engraved after drawings by Bruyères (1800-1856), painter and son-in-law of Dr. Spurzheim, the main disciple and disseminator of Franz Joseph Gall's theories. In this treatise, the author applies the phrenological system - a discipline then in vogue, founded at the end of the 18th century on the observation of cranial reliefs supposed to reveal mental faculties - to the study of individual characters, physiognomy, social relations and education.
