HIPPOCRATE - [RABELAIS] - Aphorismorum Hippocratis sectiones - Lot 110
HIPPOCRATE - [RABELAIS] - Aphorismorum Hippocratis sectiones septem, ex Franc. Rabelaesi recognitione. Quibus ex Ant. Musae Commentariis adiecimus & octavam: & quaedam alia, quae sequens indicabit pagella. Apud Seb. Gryphium Lugduni, 1543. 2 parts bound in 1 vol. in-16: 318, [2 bl.], [64] pp. Ink stain to title, soiling, handling marks and a few rings of wetness. Parchment covered with glue paper, handwritten pdt. Small tears. Rare first Lyon edition of the Aphorismes d'Hippocrate revised by François Rabelais, then physician and scientific editor at Gryphe. As shown by Mireille Huchon (Rabelais gréco-latin, 1994), the mention "ex Franc. Rabelaesi recognitione" indicates a genuine philological intervention by Rabelais: collation of sources, corrections to the Greek and Latin text, and humanist alignment of the corpus. The addition of an eighth section, taken from Antonio Musa's commentaries, places this edition within the medical rediscovery movement of the Lyonnais Renaissance.
