[DESSINS - CARICATURE] Album of 34 caricatures and 6 photogr - Lot 175
[DESSINS - CARICATURE] Album of 34 caricatures and 6 photographic portraits. S.l., [ca. 1870]. Charcoal, India ink or brown ink, watercolor, colored pencils, divided formats, pasted on cream vellum ff., 20 x 29 cm; photographs printed on albumen paper, inserted by the corners in cracks on the last ff. Contemporary half-black cloth boards. Good condition. An amusing anonymous collection of caricatures of two characters in particular: Thomas, a pansy fellow often portrayed as a soldier, and Reding, a wiry pharmacist and great lover of Greek and bathing... In addition, there are a number of caricatures (by another hand) of musicians, billiard players, an "ex-libris Buffonis", etc. The photographs at the end of the album are in good condition. The photographs at the end of the album depict French stage artists: we identify the famous comedian Coquelin aîné (creator of the role of Cyrano de Bergerac), Charles Lecocq (composer of operettas and operettas), Pauline Luidgini in her costume from "Giroflé-Girofla" (opéra bouffe by Lecocq premiered in 1874 at the Fantaisies-Parisiennes in Brussels), Sophie Croizette (member of the Comédie-Française), the latter two in stage and street costumes. Enriched with an anonymous watercolor depicting the rooftops of an urban district.
