[FLEMISH SCHOOL] Johannes COLLAERT D'APRèS JOHANNES STRADANUS - Venationes ferarum, avium, piscium. Pugnae bestiariorum : & mutuae bestiarum. [Antwerp], Philippe Galle, s.d. In-4° Italian style, 25.5 x 31.5 cm, front, 104 plates. Copperplate engraving, 20 x 26 cm. Several russets, small stains and soiling, mostly marginal, tear without loss restored with paper reinforcement to title-front and plate 26. 19th c. brown half-chagrin with corners, spine gilt-edged. Inside jaws broken, body detached from binding. Good condition inside. One of the last editions, a rare copy complete with title-frontispiece and 104 plates by Philippe Galle in association with other artists such as Adriaen Collaert, based on drawings by Jan van der Straet, known as Stradanus, of this astonishing visual encyclopedia of hunting, including falconry, fishing and even beekeeping. The plates illustrate scenes of the capture and slaughter of a wide variety of animals, starting with elephants and various wild felines - including fight scenes from ancient circus games - then wild boar, bear, crocodiles and other big game, monkeys (some wearing boots), rabbits, badgers and porcupines, as well as unicorns, fauns (playing the panpipes), giant snakes, dragons, sea monsters and other mythical creatures. Some of the plates were inspired by Stradanus's designs for the tapestries in the Florentine palace of Duke Cosimo de' Medici.
