CHINA - Popular Chinese New Year imagery: religious, ritual - Lot 194
CHINA - Popular Chinese New Year imagery: religious, ritual and domestic prints. 20th century. Several pieces damaged (tears, missing parts). Reunion of 15 Chinese folk prints (nianhua), produced mainly at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries for New Year's purposes and domestic rituals. These images, printed on wood and widely distributed, illustrate the major themes of Chinese popular culture: protective and exorcist deities, cosmological symbols (bagua), prosperity and fertility, auspicious child figures, moral justice, calendars and educational images. The ensemble includes representations of martial deities charged with protecting the home, apotropaic scenes and images of family prosperity and domestic happiness. There are also specific ritual leaves - including a sheet of gilded paper for votive purposes - testifying to the diversity of media and functions of this imagery. These prints, which are often renewed each year and rarely preserved, are today a precious testimony to the popular religiosity, beliefs and visual practices of traditional China in the modern era.rmi
