[FOUS LITTÉRAIRES] Valentine VERLAIN - La Faulx du ministre, - Lot 308
[FOUS LITTÉRAIRES] Valentine VERLAIN - La Faulx du ministre, histoire d'amour contemporaine. S.l.s.n., s.d. [ca 1927]. Fort in-8°. H.t. plates and facsimiles of autographs. Paperback. Covers defr. and damaged. All known copies bear the handwritten note on the flyleaf: "Personnel. This book is offered in execution of the author's last wishes. According to Blavier, La Faulx du ministre is an enormous memoir dedicated to Gabriel Hanotaux, "the prudent liberal who declared himself neither for nor against Dreyfus, the lover who ignominiously abandoned me". Less exalted than meticulously vengeful, the book recounts the unhappy passion of an actress for the diplomat turned minister. Seduced, then abandoned, Valentine Verlain caused a scandal in Tunis by shooting her lover; ten years later, the latter, now an academician, had her preventively arrested in Paris. The ensuing trials lasted until 1924, attracting the sympathy of Le Rappel and L'Action française. Valentine Verlain died in 1926, leaving this singular testimony of wounded love and posthumous revenge. - Ref. Blavier, p. 567. ATTACHED: 2: François LEHEL - Notre art dément. Four studies on pathological art. Paris, H. Jonquières, 1926. Frontispiece, title vignette, 48 ill. h-t., numerous ill. in text. Working ex., numerous rous. TOGETHER 2 VOLUMES.
