[FOUS LITTÉRAIRES] Paulin GAGNE - L'Unitéïde ou La femme mes - Lot 311
[FOUS LITTÉRAIRES] Paulin GAGNE - L'Unitéïde ou La femme messie. Universal poem in twelve songs and sixty acts, with chorus. Preceded by a prologue and followed by an epilogue by Mme Gagne (Élise Moreau de Rus). [Paris], sold at all booksellers in France and abroad (Montélimar, impr. et litho. Bourron), (1856-1857-1858) (on cover). In-8° : 726 pp. 3 pl. Ex. to be bound. Factitious spine broken and disjointed in places. First edition, illustrated with 1 frontispiece and 2 plates out of text, of this vast universalist poem. Paulin Gagne's major and most ambitious work, L'Unitéïde is the culmination of a poetic, religious and political project unparalleled in the 19th century. Conceived as a "poetic Babel", the text develops a messianic vision based on the advent of a Woman-Messiah, called to regenerate humanity, which has been led astray by evil. The poem combines verse, chorus, symbolic proclamations and ideological neologisms, in an attempt to achieve a total synthesis of religions, political systems and languages. Paulin Gagne (1808-1876), a lawyer by training, prolific poet and marginal figure in Parisian intellectual life, was a tireless publicist, recurrent election candidate and author of utopian politico-religious projects. L'Unitéïde, announced and matured over several years, represents the centerpiece of his work, both in terms of its scope (some 25,000 verses) and its doctrinal impact.
