[FOUS LITTÉRAIRES] Adolphe SAISSET - Dieu et son homonyme. - Lot 315
[FOUS LITTÉRAIRES] Adolphe SAISSET - Dieu et son homonyme. Paris, les principaux libraires, 1867. In-8°, [6], 317, [3] pp. pp. 101 and 107 inverted, first few pages stained. Bound in contemporary burgundy half-chagrin, smooth threaded spine, gilt title. Joints slightly rubbed. A singular work in which the author, mixing irony and speculation, sets out to demonstrate the identity of God and man - "his namesake". Blavier sees it as one of the most characteristic examples of nineteenth-century mysticism and reasoning: Saisset, driven by an inordinate metaphysical ambition, claims to "correct the errors of theology" and offer a synthesis between divinity and humanity. Little circulated, this volume was noticed in the catalogs of literary fools for its sententious tone and baffling logic. The author should not be confused with the philosopher of the same name (1810-1863), a disciple of Victor Cousin and professor at the Sorbonne. This name association, undoubtedly deliberate, may have contributed to the misunderstanding surrounding this singular work. Ref. Dorbon, 4362. Caillet, 9831. Blavier, 281-282.
