Jean-Marie Emmanuel Peillet (Reims, 1914 - Paris, 1973) was a philosophy professor, intellectual leader and central figure of post-war 'pataphysics. Co-founder and driving force behind the Collège de 'Pataphysique from 1948 onwards, he played a decisive role in the rediscovery and valorization of the literary margins, from Jarry to Ducasse, in assertive opposition to traditional academic frameworks. As a magazine host, editor and prolific letter writer, he often acted under a variety of pseudonyms (Jean-Hugues Sainmont, Latis, Mélanie Le Plumet), making the Collège a place of erudite gaiety and intellectual experimentation. Alongside his philosophical and pataphysical activities, Emmanuel Peillet was an active amateur photographer, exhibiting regularly between the 1940s and 1950s and using his own photographs to illustrate magazines and books, notably Philosophie du départ (1939). In the 1960s, he developed an erudite passion for cacti, building up a substantial collection, systematically photographing their flowering and, in 1968, producing a handwritten collection of portraits of key figures in cactus history. This practice, at once scientific, aesthetic and playful, extends his interest in marginal knowledge and "imaginary solutions". Ref.
