Pierre ALECHINSKY - 5 signed or autographed typed letters to - Lot 372
Pierre ALECHINSKY - 5 signed or autographed typed letters to Michel Antaki. Between May 1982 and November 1985. Various formats (letters or cards). The first correspondence, sent from Bougival on May 15, 1982, is a card illustrated with a composition by the artist, entitled "Neufchâteau". "Merci pour vos envois d'une certaine gaité, ils font plaisir à l'émigré de luxe que je suis, au Belge par distraction qui glousse dans son coin: y a pas d'avance!" The following letters relate to a practice Alechinsky had begun shortly before: the stamping of manhole covers from various cities, which serve as the starting point for his works, as well as a project for an exhibition at the Cirque Divers. Alechinsky met Michel Antaki, one of the founders of Cirque Divers, on the occasion of the exhibition he organized in Liège with Karel Appel in 1983, which is mentioned in the letter of December 16, 1983. For the Cirque Divers exhibition, Alechinsky had planned to use the pseudonym "Monsieur Durant" (his mother's maiden name) in order to go incognito, which explains why the letters refer to this imaginary character. Antaki provides him with the manhole covers for the city of Liège. According to the letter of August 15, 1984, "the results have so far brought him no satisfaction"; in the card of December 22, 1984, Alechinsky writes that "Monsieur Durant declares forfeit". However, there are several works made from impressions of Liège manhole covers dating from 1984, including one acquired by the city of Liège in 2000 from the Amis du Cirque Divers (perhaps this is the "sign of recognition" mentioned in the same card.
