[MAMBOUR Auguste] Joseph CONRAD - Tales from the Congo. Lith - Lot 519
[MAMBOUR Auguste] Joseph CONRAD - Tales from the Congo. Lithographs by Auguste MAMBOUR. (Liège, Desoer for the Union liégeoise du Livre et de l'Estampe, 1934). In-4° : 206, [4] pp. (Marginal marks of handling. Mute cover with flaps, partially uncut. No dust jacket or slipcase. Cover faded, 41 illustrations by Auguste Mambour, printed by Maison Bénard: frontispiece, 24 full-page and 16 in the text. First collective edition combining "Un avant-poste du progrès", translated by G. Jean-Aubry, and "Le coeur des ténèbres", translated by Andre Ruyters and revised for this edition by G. Jean-Aubry. Unique edition of 85 numbered copies on van Gelder vellum. Unjustified copy. Accompanied by a typed letter, 1 f. 4°, signed by Henri Desoer, addressed to Pierre Hubaut, Librairie Africaine (Brussels), November 25, 1959, concerning this unnumbered copy. For him, there is only one possible explanation: one of the members received his copy, damaged it and had it replaced by one that was kept in the archives and not intended for sale. Beautiful illustration by Liege artist Mambour (1896-1968), who spent 6 months in the Congo in 1922.
