William ROBERTSON - The History of America. Translated from - Lot 564
William ROBERTSON - The History of America. Translated from the English. Seconde édition revue & corrigée. Paris, Pissot, 1780. 4 volumes in-12 : 380, 572, 520-[3], 434 pp.; 5 folding plates. Faint ring of wetness at end of vol. IV. Green half calf with corners, paper boards, smooth spine, gilt pdt and tomaison. Second edition of the French translation by Suard and Morellet (original English edition: 1777; first French edition: 1778). Robertson (1721-1793) recounts the discovery of the New World, European expansion and, above all, the Spanish conquest, whose violence he describes in no uncertain terms, earning the work some contemporary criticism. Nonetheless, the whole remains solidly documented, the author having drawn on a vast corpus of Spanish books and manuscripts to fuel his investigation. Illustrated with 4 folding maps (Gulf of Mexico, South America, Mexico, Atlantic regions of North and South America) and a chronological table of Aztec rulers. Robertson later completed this work with Histoire de la Virginie et de la Nouvelle-Angleterre (1788, trans. 1798).
