[CURIOSA] The Hours of Paphos. Moral tales, by a sacrificer - Lot 313
[CURIOSA] The Hours of Paphos. Moral tales, by a sacrificer of Venus. S.l.s.n., 1787. In-8°, on large paper, unpaginated: [37] ff. including the frontispiece and plates: title, 4 culs-de-lampe and 12 figs. Strictly contemporary binding in painted blond calf, the boards framed with a twisted roulette and decorated with wavy oblique bands alternating red, green and black. Smooth spine decorated with alternating lyres and amphorae, separated by rat-tooth fillets; green morocco title-piece, gilt title. Gilt edges, serrated inner border, snail-style endpapers. Minor rubbing to corners and spine ends, spine slightly chipped with a few chips; very rare foxing. Rare first edition of this collection of twelve tales in verse, the text of which is entirely engraved in intaglio. Each tale is preceded by a captioned figure, also engraved in the Desrais style, directly related to the subject of the story. A precious copy on large Hollande laid paper, preserved at very wide margins. It is covered with a remarkable painted binding of the period, in a revolutionary spirit, whose geometric and polychrome decoration gives the work a particularly attractive character. A copy of the Gérard Noordman provenance, bearing his bookplate and passed on in the sale of this collection. A fine copy of one of the most refined free books of the late 18th century, sought-after for its illustrations, its fully engraved text and its presentation on large paper.
