Charles-Joseph, prince de LIGNE - Lettres et pensées du maré - Lot 328
Charles-Joseph, prince de LIGNE - Lettres et pensées du maréchal prince de Ligne, published by M.me la baronne de Staël Holstein. Second edition.
Paris, Genève, J.J. Paschoud, 1809. In-8°: xiii-[1]-333-[3] pp. contemporary binding, half calf, smooth spine decorated, title page.
Second Paris edition of this collection of selected letters edited by Baroness de Staël, including letters to Joseph II and Marshal de Lacy, Prince de Kaunitz, Catherine II, as well as "Mes deux conversations avec Jean-Jacques" and, no doubt for good measure, "Mon séjour chez M. de Voltaire". This edition was published by Paschoud in the same year as the first edition printed at this address, and considered by Longchamp as the original. Longchamp (no. 83) describes the text of this "second" edition as being "in all respects, similar to that of the original edition", with errata on the last page, which, again according to Longchamp, were only corrected in the third edition of 1809. Basil Guy gives a similar description. However, the present copy, which conforms to J. Vercruysse's description, is a corrected edition and consequently without an errata leaf, not to mention a few minor variants. Ref. De Backer, XXXIX. Guy, p. 11, no. 4. Cioranescu 18th c., 40373. Longchamp, 83. Vercruysse (20028), p. 275. Liesen, 71.
