[Gabriele SIONITA / JOANNES HESRONITA / WOLFGANG DRECHSLER ]- Arabia seu Arabum vicinarumque gentium Orientalium leges, ritus, sacri et profani mores, instituta et historia : acc. praeterea varia per Arabiam itinera, in quibus multa notatu digna, enarrantur. Amsterdam, apud Joannem Janssonium, 1633. In-24: 297 [=287], [1 bl.] pp. 1st endpaper cut out. Parchment. Heading short of margin. First edition of this Amsterdam compilation devoted to Arabia and neighboring Eastern peoples, bringing together texts on Arabian laws, rites, sacred and profane mores, institutions, history and itineraries. The work opens with Gabriel Sionite and Jean Hesronite's treatise De nonnullis Orientalium urbibus, necnon indigenarum religione ac moribus, originally published in Paris in 1619, and reproduced here as part of a larger collection. Gabriel Sionite and Jean Hesronite, Maronite scholars from Lebanon trained at the Maronite College in Rome, were interpreters to Louis XIII. Their treatise offers a brief description of several major Oriental cities - including Aleppo, Tripoli and Cairo - combining historical notes, observations on local customs, religion and illustrious figures. The compilation also includes extracts from Christophe Richer, Jean Cotovicus, Johann Ludwig Gottfried, Adrien Romain, Wolfgang Drechsler, as well as an appendix from Al-Farghani. Ref. STCN, 850447259.
