Translated from the English [by Van Effen]. The Hague, Henri Scheurleer, 1757. 3 volumes in-12 : [8]-xvi-[2]-312, [2]-xii-296, [4]-xvi-280 pp. 8 pl. (One or other rare pox, qqs ff. very slightly browned). Contemporary calf, smooth spine with fleurons, title-pieces, red edges (Epidermures, tom. pages faded). Edition illustrated with 8 etchings by Andreas Reinhardt jr: frontispiece, 6 etchings (vol. I) and 1 plate illustrating the Battle between ancient and modern books in the library of St. James (vol. II). Developed in several parts, this work offers a biting satire of the famous quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns. It is structured around several texts: in the first volume, theConte du TonneauandLa bataille des livres vigorously defend the superiority of the Ancients in the literary and cultural sphere. The third volume includes a Treatise on the Dissensions between the Nobility and the People in the Republics of Athens and Rome, as well as two satirical essays: The Art of Crawling in Poetry, attributed to Pope, and The Art of Political Lying, attributed to John Arbuthnot. The title of the collection refers to a maritime practice: throwing an empty barrel at a whale (symbolizing fine spirits) to divert it from the ship (representing civil society, politics and religion). This image illustrates the desire to divert attention from major social and political issues through distractions or misleading speeches. The original work appeared in 1704, while the French translation was published in 1721. It is an acerbic critique of the political and literary issues of the day, while employing subtle humor and biting satire. Ref. Cohen, 964. STCN.
