Paris, Artus Bertrand, Amiot, l'auteur, 1839. Large in-8°, xvi, 291, [1] p., 24 steel-engraved plates. Period foxing to text and mainly to margins of plates, small pale ring of marginal wetness at end of volume, discharges to serpents. Contemporary red half-basane with corners, spine ribbed, gilt edges. A few stains on the boards. A good copy. An important illustrated itinerary of the voyage from Paris to Constantinople by steamship, published at a time when steam navigation was transforming the conditions of travel in the Mediterranean and towards the Levant. The work is both a travelogue and a practical guide: it accompanies the reader from stage to stage, while providing useful information on shipping lines, distances, fares, currencies and the material conditions of the journey. The steel-engraved plates, based on views brought back from the route, illustrate the major stages of this crossing to the Orient: the Mediterranean, Italy, Greece, the islands, the Dardanelles and Constantinople. The set is a precious testimony to the beginnings of modern travel by steam liner, and to the evolution of tourist practices in the 19th century. Ref: Polak, 6371.
