Antwerp, T.-J. Janssens, 1839. In-8°: viii, 171, [1 bl.] pp. Ep. pox. affecting especially first and last ff. Contemporary half calf, veined paper boards, smooth spine decorated, green basane, marbled edges. Second edition, "which differs greatly from the previous one" published in 1830 (Frédéric de Reiffenberg, quoted by de Le Court, p. 625), published under pseudonym by J.R.L. de Kerckhove, a medical doctor in Antwerp. Again according to de Reiffenberg, "the manuscripts and authentic documents are from the same family as the alleged genealogist [...]. The author did not yet believe that he had established his ancestry in a sufficiently incontestable manner; he reprinted in the Mémoires de l'Académie d'archéologie d'Anvers, under the veil of anonymity, a genealogical fragment concerning the Viscounts de Kerckhove dit Vander Varent [...]" (ibid., pp. 624-625). Ref. De le Court, p. 625. Bibliographie nationale, I, p. 124 (1830 ed.). Handwritten copy, in an old hand, of F. de Reiffenberg's notice, on the first endpaper. With the ordinances, regulations & instructions of the said chamber. Lille, 1713. Small in-8°: [2], 272, [16] pp. Some spotting, faint spots and minor wetness on a few pages. Binding Signed J. Pernot, half-brown calf, marbled paper boards and endpapers, spine ribbed, marbled edges. First edition of this "rather rare book" (Saffroy, 22217). Reissued in 1715, this work is important for both French Flanders and the Southern Netherlands. It includes an index of the names and surnames of the families mentioned. Ardennes historiographer and civil servant Jean de Seur (1st half of 17th c.) held the post of ordinary clerk of the city of Lille from 1603 until his death before 1650, when he was made an equerry by letters patent dated 1609. Only the part concerning the years 1569 to 1643 is his own work. For earlier years (1385-1568), he uses data compiled by Jean Barrat (1496-1576), auditor of the Chambre des Comptes de Lille, whose manuscript is held by the Archives générales du royaume de Belgique. Ref. BN, XXII, col. 320-323. XGV, 1182 and 1280. 3: Constant-Philippe SERRURE and Auguste VOISIN, publ. by - Le Livre de Baudoyn, conte [sic] de Flandre; suivi de fragments du Roman de Trasignyes. Brussels, Berthot et Périchon, 1836. In-8°: xxiv, [2 bl.], 227, [1] pp. front. Rous. on first and last ff., small marginal perforation affecting faux-t., front. and title. Contemporary half calf, marbled paper boards, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges. Reprint of an ancient novel of chivalry, a literary treasure of our regions in the Middle Ages. Copy complete with frontispiece depicting Baudouin on horseback, title in a gothic engraved frame printed in red, woodcut figures in the text. The text, which respects the original spelling, is preceded by a historical and bibliographical introduction describing the early - and very rare - editions of the novel identified by Brunet. According to Brunet, the first edition was published in Lyon in 1747. The present reprint follows the edition given by Neyret in Chambéry in 1485. It is followed by "Fragment de l'histoire de Gilion de Trasignyes et de dame Marie sa femme, d'après le manuscrit de la Bibliothèque d'Iéna". Glossary. Ref. Bibliogr. nat. III, p. 410. Provenance: from the library of the Ghent bibliophile Théodore de Valenzi (1813-1855), with his engraved armorial bookplate. SET OF 3 VOLUMES.
