[CHINA] Alfons von MUMM - Ein Tagebuch in Bildern. [Title on the upper cover]. Meinen Mitarbeitern in Peking zur freundlichen Erinnerung an ihren Chef. (Berlin, Graphische Gesellschaft, 1902). 240 x 360 mm, publisher's half tan leather binding with corners, percaline boards, title in gilt lettering (some light scratches). [4], 268 leaves. Limited edition not determined, copy no. 242. Small perforation affecting the first endpaper creased, lower corner of the first 3 ff. creased. Album with more than 600 phototypes spread over 268 plates from photographs taken by Philipp Alfons Freiherr Mumm von Schwarzenstein (1859 - 1924), German diplomat appointed to Beijing in 1900 following the assassination of Ambassador Clemens von Ketteler during the Boxer uprising. He signed the 1901 treaty that ended the Boxer Rebellion. He also maintained excellent relations with Empress Cixi. A knowledgeable Sinophile and an excellent amateur photographer, he left this rare souvenir album on Beijing, which it seems was not intended for commercialization. Precious testimony giving to see scenes of the daily life (markets, street scenes, stalls...), Ming tombs, many views of the Forbidden City, the Yangtze, the Tsingtau... RARE.
