[CHINA] WANYAN LINQING 完顏麟慶 - 鴻雪因緣圖記 Hong xue yin yuan tu ji. 1849. 3 parts in 6 volumes, 300 x 170 mm. Sewn in Japanese style, blue paper covers, title labels, in navy cloth (later) slipcase (small tears and lacks, some labels blackened, many folds torn). FIRST EDITION. "Hongxue yinyuan tuji" 鴻雪因緣圖記, whose English translation varies "Drawings of fleeting memories and karma", "A Wild Swan's Trail"; "Tracks in the Snow"; "Footsteps in the Snow of a Solitary Goose"... belongs to the literary genre of "nianpu", chronological auto/biography. It is a monument and the pinnacle of the genre, both in its original form and in its illustration. The elaboration of this autobiographical narrative began in 1827 when Wanyan Linqing (1791-1846) decided to commission various paintings to retrace his experiences. He sought the advice of the painter Wang Chunquan. A first version of the first collection only in illustrated form was completed in 1829. It was not until 1836, when he was the director general of river works in the Jiangnan region, a position that made him famous, that he began to write the story. It was also at this time that the visual and textual formatting of the story was decided upon: each chapter is associated with a painting and various illustrations. These recollections are the most illustrated autobiographical Chinese story; they include 240 woodcuts, some of which were taken from other autobiographical stories. He died in 1846 and his descendants decided to publish these stories between 1847 and 1849. Our copy is missing 16 woodcuts from the second part of the second volume. Multiple tears of folds, some entirely torn, missing 1 part of 2 plates.
