Paul ÉLUARD - Premières vues anciennes. - Lot 191
Paul ÉLUARD - Premières vues anciennes. S.l., Extrait de Minotaure n° 10, 1937. Booklet, in-4, stapled (small red stain in lower margin, p. 49). Original edition and rare offprint of this text decorated with 11 small woodcuts, one of which is reproduced on the cover. COPY ENRICHED WITH: 1- A signed autograph letter from the author to Françoise and Ernst Moerman on page 1. 2- A large drawing by René MAGRITTE, signed "Mag.", on the 3rd cover, with a highly explicit pornographic subject. 3- illustrating a handwritten text in the same vein, "Tarif blanc", signed Scutenaire, all in graphite. Provenance: Ernst Moerman (1897-1944), Belgian surrealist writer and filmmaker, friend of Éluard and Magritte. Ernst Moerman made his film "Mr Fantômas" in 1937. According to Domenica Taria, this film was for him "the abandonment of the written word". For him, cinema was a new form of poetry. In his film, he devoted scenes to Paul Éluard's "Capitale de la douleur". This 18-minute short refers to filmmaker Louis Feuillade's version, but above all to the atmosphere of Magritte's paintings. Magritte also paid tribute to Feuillade and Fantômas in 2 paintings, "Assassin menacé" (1926) and "Le retour de flamme" (1943).
