[PISSARO] Émile VERHAEREN - The Little Old Men. - Lot 298
[PISSARO] Émile VERHAEREN - The Little Old Men. London, Hacon & Ricketts (Eragny Press), 1901. In-16 Italian style (12.5 x 16 cm): 16, [3] pages. Publisher's boards: spine in gray paper, boards in Michallet blue paper decorated with a repeated floral motif of wolfsbane, printed in two shades of green. Gilt title to spine. Presented in a havana half-maroquin folder with corners and matching lined slipcase (spine of folder slightly faded). An edition of great typographic refinement, printed by the Eragny Press, founded by Lucien and Esther Pissarro. The text, a collection of poems taken from "Petites Légendes" (Brussels, 1900), is presented in a format inspired by Chinese books: printed on Japanese paper, only on the front of untrimmed leaves, with decorative lettering on each page - the first in three colors, the following in red. The book opens with a color frontispiece, drawn by Lucien Pissarro and wood-engraved by Lucien and Esther Pissarro. It also includes a colophon and the studio's press mark. Limited edition of 230 copies, of which 200 are for sale. A superb testimony to the encounter between Belgian Symbolist poetry and English Arts & Crafts aesthetics. A very fine copy, with remarkable typographic and decorative execution. Ref. T. Sturge Moore, A brief account of the origin of the Eragny Press & a note on the relation of the printed book as a work of art to life. Hammersmith, Eragny Press, 1903, pp. 19-20.
