[FOUS LITTÉRAIRES] Charles-Joseph de GRAVE - République des - Lot 302
[FOUS LITTÉRAIRES] Charles-Joseph de GRAVE - République des Champs Elysées, ou Monde ancien... Posthumous work... Tome premier [-troisième]. Gand, impr. de P. F. de Goesin-Verhaeghe, 1806. 3 volumes in-8° : 266, xlviii, [2] ; [2], 251, [3], xli ; [2], 266, [2], lviii pp. Pale freckling, small worm gallery and marginal restoration to vol. II. Binding late 19th c., brown half calf, marbled paper boards, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges. Slight spotting. Posthumous first edition of this literary curiosity, intended to demonstrate with the utmost seriousness "that the Champs Élysées and the Hell of the Ancients are the name of an ancient Republic of just and religious men, situated at the northern extremity of Gaul, and especially in the islands of the Bas-Rhin; [.. that the Elysians, also called, in other respects, Atlantes, Hyperboréens, Cimmériens, &c, civilized the ancient peoples, including the Egyptians and the Greeks", etc. (Cf. title). Charles-Joseph de Grave (1736-1805), jurisconsult and amateur philologist, displays in this work an inordinate belgitude, asserting that Homer and Hesiod are Belgian, that Atlantis lies off the Flemish coast or that Ulysses landed at Blankenberge and founded Assebroek! Ref. Blavier, Les fous littéraires, p. 166. Provenance: engraved armorial bookplate of the Ghent bibliophile Théodore de Valenzi (1813-1855).
