[Baruch SPINOZA ]- The Key to the Sanctuary by a scholar of our century [...]. Leiden, Pierre Warnaer [i.e. Amsterdam, J. Rieuwertsz ?], 1678. In-12, 140 x 180 mm, polished Lavallière morocco, boards surrounded by gilt lace with fillets, rat's tooth and small floral irons, smooth spine decorated with small gilt irons, brown leather label, fillet on the edges, scroll on the fillings, paper endpapers with gilt stars and dots on a white background, gilt edges (period binding). Slightly rubbed, a few small stains without gravity, small wetness with lack of paper to the upper bl. guard. A charming copy. [34]-531-[61] pp. (Pale freckles on 1st title, long old ms. note in pencil and ink on white endpapers). First edition of the French translation, attributed to Gabriel de Saint-Glain, of this famous work (Latin ed.: "Tractatus theologico-politicus", 1670) known today as "Traité théologico-politique". This translation contributed greatly to the dissemination of this text, which was condemned by Catholic, Calvinist and Jewish authorities alike. With the first known version of the "Adnotationes" ("Curious remarks, and necessary for the understanding of this book") written by Spinoza (1632-1677) a few months before his death for a new edition. Our copy also has the two alternative titles (and addresses) under which the edition was later distributed (same date): "Reflexions curieuses d'un esprit des-interresse sur les matieres les plus importantes au Salut, tant public que particulier" (Cologne, Claude Emanuel) and "Traitté des ceremonies superstitieuses des Juifs tant anciens que modernes" (Amsterdam, Jacob Smith). "The copies that unite the three titles are rare" (Catalogue d'une collection d'Elzevirs [...] et d'autres livres rares et curieux composant le cabinet de feu M. Edme-Hippolyte-Jacques Michau, baron de Montaran, Paris, Delion, 1849, n° 102). Bibliography: STCN 843272147 (under "Tractatus theologico-politicus"); "Printing and the Mind of Man", 153 (ed. 1670). Provenance: Maxime Van Nieuwenhuyse (modern engraved bookplate).
