[TYPOGRAPHIE] Pierre-Simon FOURNIER - Manuel typographique, - Lot 300
[TYPOGRAPHIE] Pierre-Simon FOURNIER - Manuel typographique, utile aux gens de lettres & à ceux qui exercent les différentes parties de l'art de l'imprimerie. Paris, Barbou, 1764-1766. 2 volumes in-8 : xxxii, 323, [5] ; [2], xilv, [2], 306 pp. (Scattered brown spots). 2 frontispieces and 16 folding plates. Contemporary calf, boards decorated with gilt framing, spine ribbed, title and appendices (Joints slightly rubbed, spines cracked). First edition of an emblematic work dedicated to the art of typography. The book is distinguished by its two engraved frontispieces, one designed by Gravelot and the other, unsigned, attributed to de Sève. The first volume also features 16 folded plates, illustrating the various tools used in this discipline. The second volume is a catalog of type specimens, both French and foreign, as well as vignettes and musical notations, all engraved by Fournier. This volume includes four folding plates, some of which are printed in red and black. The specimens in this volume represent Fournier's typographic collection, whose influence extended to European printing until the end of the 18th century. He was particularly innovative in the field of italics, integrating "Roman" serifs into the design of the letters and reducing the number of linked letters, which still testified to the calligraphic origins of the typefaces.
