[Claire de Kersaint, duchesse de DURAS ]- Édouard. - Lot 238
[Claire de Kersaint, duchesse de DURAS ]- Édouard. Paris, Ladvocat, 1825. 2 volumes in-12 : [4], 238 ; [4], 225 pp. Some spotting, one or other leaf slightly browned. Copy without publisher's catalog. Binding by Petit-Simier: green morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, richly decorated ribbed spine, gilt lettering and titles, gilt edges, inner border. A fine copy. First public edition. According to Vicaire, it was preceded by two off-prints, one in 1824, the other in 1825, the latter printed by Jules Didot in very small numbers for the author and his family. The Ladvocat edition was published for the benefit of a charity. After Ourika, Édouard continues his exploration of passions thwarted by social conventions. Set in the final hours of the Ancien Régime, the novel depicts the impossible love of Édouard, son of a Lyonnais lawyer, for Madame de Nevers, a young widow whose rank makes her inaccessible. The tension between individual sentiment and social hierarchy heralds some of the major motifs of the Romantic novel, and in many ways foreshadows "Le Rouge et le Noir" (The Red and the Black). An elegant copy in green morocco signed Petit-Simier. Reference: Vicaire, III, 535.
